Routing security, new members and autumn meetings

This month’s programme features: a focus on RPKI, and a welcome to nLighten, Koesio and Telenco, a look back at our BGP workshop in Valence, and the autumn aPEERo events in Toulouse, Lyon, Paris, Strasbourg and Bordeaux.

The Internet is, first and foremost, a matter of shared trust. When we exchange data, we also share a degree of responsibility: to make the network more secure, more resilient and more efficient. This is not just a matter for engineers; it is a question of collective governance.

This month, we’re highlighting the RPKI. The standard may seem austere, but the idea is simple: to verify what is legitimate and reject what is not. A discipline of scepticism that is useful far beyond BGP tables.

The coming weeks will be packed: workshops, aPEERo, the France-IX Tour. These are all opportunities to bring this collective to life, where operators, businesses, local authorities and enthusiasts come together. Let’s continue to build digital sovereignty through action and by sharing.

Focus — Routing security and RPKI adoption

rpkiThe issue was raised at our AGM in June. Our article reviews the challenges, the current state of adoption and the ways to accelerate the roll-out of the RPKI in France, with practical suggestions for both SMEs and large organisations.

Energy and the internet have become incredibly influential drivers of change in our societies.

Through the DECODES project (Datacentre Energy Consumption Optimisation by DNS EvaluationS), which has been selected by the ANR and is coordinated by Afnic, in partnership with Télécom SudParis and the École nationale des ponts et chaussées, we will help to address this challenge.

The DNS is an essential building block of the network – unobtrusive yet ubiquitous: it operates continuously and relies on thousands of servers around the world. Its energy consumption remains poorly documented.

At France-IX, we will contribute our perspective as an infrastructure operator to the project, supplementing the research with practical observations drawn from our network.

Our philosophy is simple: to understand, measure and optimise, in order to make digital infrastructure more resource-efficient and effective. In short, to help do good, and to do it well. With DECODES, this also applies to the DNS.

A look back at the BGP workshop in Valencia

Thank you to the participants and the trainer for two intensive and useful days. The satisfaction survey confirms the value of this format and paves the way for further safety-focused training (RPKI, MANRS).

  • 92 % consider the content to be immediately applicable,
  • 100 % would recommend training,
  • 86 % would like a security-focused suite (RPKI, MANRS).

Welcome to our new members

nLighten : a data centre operator with sites in France (including Strasbourg, Lyon, Besançon, Paris, Antibes and Valbonne) and host to our aPEERo #15 in Strasbourg.

Koesio : specialists and leaders in the field of documentary and digital information processing for the past 34 years, who optimise, define, develop and ensure the integration of all your digital tools

Telenco : design, manufacture and deployment of integrated solutions for data centres, covering all critical environments: from Meet Me Rooms to cleanrooms and grey rooms.

Why attend a BGP workshop?

Because Theory only makes sense when you get stuck in..
The BGP workshops, it takes two days to get the full picture:
basics, routes, filters, errors, best practice.

But above all : concrete cases. And experts to guide you.

You’re developing your skills. So are your teams.
It’s simple, useful and targeted.
