As co-founder of the\u2019<a style=\"color: #1e3f70; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"AOTA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aota.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AOTA<\/a> (Association of Alternative Telecoms Operators), which I had the honour of chairing for five years, I was able to see just how crucial a role trade associations play.<\/p>\r\n<p>They are not merely places for exchange. They are <strong>catalysts<\/strong>. Spaces where common positions are forged, where visions take shape, and where concrete actions are organised to drive an entire sector forward.<\/p>\r\n<p>That is precisely what makes FRNIX so strong today.<\/p>\r\n<p>Against a backdrop where the <strong>digital sovereignty<\/strong> has become a major strategic issue, with questions of European autonomy in the areas of networks, infrastructure and security taking centre stage both in public debate and in industrial decision-making; our collective responsibility is therefore all the greater.<\/p>\r\n<p>FRNIX, as the parent organisation of France-IX, occupies a unique position within this ecosystem. However, a previously unpublished study of the 1,855 French Autonomous Systems (ASNs) registered with RIPE NCC reveals a very different reality: nearly half of them (48.9 %) are based in \u00cele-de-France. Far behind, Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes accounts for just 12 %, and ten French departments have absolutely no ASNs within their boundaries.<\/p>\r\n<p>This imbalance has very real consequences: traffic generated in the regions is forced to pass through Paris (or further afield) before returning to its destination,<strong> mechanically increasing latency and dependence on national transit routes<\/strong>. However, there is no technical reason why an email sent from Rennes to a server hosted in Rennes should take this detour.<\/p>\r\n<p>A comparison with other European countries is revealing: with around 27 ASNs per million inhabitants, France lags far behind Germany (38 ASNs per million), the United Kingdom (45 ASNs per million) and, above all, the Netherlands (more than 87 ASNs per million). The Jacobin tradition seems to have carried over into network architecture, <strong>bringing together investment, expertise and infrastructure<\/strong> around the capital.<\/p>\r\n<p>In light of this, the development of regional pop is no longer simply a matter of optimisation: it is a <strong>strategic necessity<\/strong>. By enabling networks to exchange traffic locally, IXPs reduce dependence on long-distance routes and strengthen the resilience of the ecosystem. In the event of a crisis \u2013 such as a submarine cable cut or a transit operator failure \u2013 this local autonomy acts as a safety net for the national internet. This is precisely the mission that FRNIX is committed to, <strong>alongside its members<\/strong>, through its events, BGP training courses and support for regional initiatives.<\/p>\r\n<p>The resilience of our national infrastructure will depend on our ability to transform this centralised spider\u2019s web into a <strong>a true mesh network<\/strong>, robust and distributed.
