Interconnection thus transforms separate infrastructures into a truly interoperable global network.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Internet exchange points<\/strong> are at the heart of this dynamic. They enable networks to connect directly, reduce distances, improve service quality and enhance resilience. They are not merely pieces of equipment: they are neutral spaces where relationships of trust are forged, to the benefit of both users and digital stakeholders.<\/p>\r\n<p>This approach is more relevant than ever. Content delivery, cloud services and AI are changing data flows and increasing the need for proximity, capacity and control. The answer does not lie in a distinction between non-profit and commercial IXPs. Behind the same term lie <strong>very different organisations<\/strong> : member organisations, foundations, universities, research networks, telecoms operators, data centre groups and specialist private companies.<\/p>\r\n<p>Our new article offers a clear analysis of a subject that has been reduced to simplistic generalisations. It encourages us to distinguish between<strong> 4 key dimensions<\/strong> : who controls the organisation, who actually operates the infrastructure, what services it provides, and the rules governing how networks participate in it.
